Hands-On for Predator Control: Trap Building in Action
In mid-April, a small but mighty group of volunteers gathered for a hands-on trap building session—our first for the year. Hosted at the DTS workshed (a big thank you to Karen and Umesh for generously providing the space), the group brought together spare timber, mesh, tools, and a shared commitment to restoring our environment.
Over two focused hours, we built a solid number of tunnel traps—some targeting rats, others larger traps for stoats, weasels, and ferrets. These traps are now helping protect vulnerable wildlife across Muriwai: placed in bush areas starting from the north in Korowai Dunes - 5 Miles Strip, all the way towards Maukatia and the southern bays to support the Muriwai Penguin Project, deployed through the Goldie Bush and its surrounding private land for the Halo project, and made available for public purchase through the community nursery (Saturdays 10am–12pm).
